Chapter Seven

“Iwas so stupid. I gave up everything, including God, for this man. How could I have done that? How could I have let this one man turn my life upside down to the way he wanted it?” My voice echoed in the quiet cabin, a raw mixture of regret and realization.

Thinking about all the times Darius had told me to stop something disgusted me. I felt remorseful and did not know how I had gotten to that point. The memories flashed vividly, each one like a dagger piercing my heart.

“Look, we can’t go back and change things—we can only change them now. Next, what you now need to do is forgive yourself. I think once you forgive yourself, you can forgive the other person.” Pastor Campbell's words were steady, grounding me amidst the chaos of my emotions.

The pastor continued as I turned to listen to him. His eyes held a compassionate intensity that made me feel both exposed and understood.

“Forgiving yourself is simply letting go of what you are holding against yourself so that you can move on with God. If God has moved on, we should do the same. Let me also add that the energy it takes to harbor anger, hatred, and resentment towards yourself is exhausting. Every bit of energy we give to negative thoughts and dwelling on regrets robs us of the energy we need to become the person God wants us to be. It’s important to keep reminding yourself that you can and will get through this difficult season of your life by the grace of God. God through the Holy Spirit will give you the strength to move on with a renewed sense of hope and optimism and will help you forgive yourself and others. So, you have to give it all to God. In order to forgive, you need the help of God. One cannot do it all by themselves. Are you ready to give it to God?” His words were like a balm, soothing yet probing, pushing me towards a resolution.

“How do I even do that?” The question hung in the air, filled with the weight of my uncertainty.

“With these simple words. ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’ The part we forget is it says learn from me. You want to forgive yourself and others, learn from God on how He forgives daily. God says in His word, ‘For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.’” His voice was gentle, each word a stepping stone towards the peace I so desperately needed.

I took in the words, realizing that forgiveness was the first step on this new journey. The realization felt like a ray of sunlight piercing through a dense fog.

“So, your first assignment is two things. One, I want you to do a study on forgiveness.
